Toys on the Lake

June 6th, 2011 at 04:32 am

As my husband and I were paddling our "given to us" paddle boat around our lake yesterday, we got to get an up close and personal look at the new fun stuff everyone has acquired for the new summer season.

A couple homes that were "for sale" have been bought up and families have moved in. Lots of the lake homes had new patio items and umbrella's on decks, new sand in their beaching areas, new loungers and floating toys in their swimming areas, but what really caught my attention was all the new boats on the Lake.

Now, I manage the beach and boating club which is one of the only accesses to the Lake, so I got to see most of the new ones coming in, but I guess I didn't pay as much attention until I was floating around the Lake yesterday.

I found myself a little on the jealous side telling my husband that I would like new patio furniture, that motorhome, that speed boat, pontoon, hottub, jetski, that's a nice car, etc.

Holy Cow, here I was in our very used paddle boat, that my husband has added drink holders and other ammenities to it, to which I now call the "paddelac" wanting more and not thinking about the debt consequences that most of those people, with all the new fun toys, were probably in.

I am glad I woke up this morning and realized it, but I am still on a quest to buy myself a used, new to me vehicle in September, have a used boat with a motor possibly next year, a hot tub and a motorhome somewhere down the line (if gas prices stabelize). I need to make a plan, putting dollars next to them, and saving towards those future items.

But, what a fun time we had yesterday on the Lake and got a great tan to boot.

    Paddelac-- I love it!

Outdoor furniture--yesterday I saw a big log and imagined cutting it into a nice rustic bench for the garden. Then I imagined drilling out a couple of drink holders! Only top of the line garden furniture for me, ya know. Wink

Suzie Orman's famous quote: 'Live below your means but within your needs.' Do you need new patio furniture, speedboat, pontoon, hot tub, jetski etc or just want it?

Snafu...Well, I don't have any of it. But, yes we will buy a used new to us boat and hot tub sometime in the future.

Joan...Love your idea. We actually had a very large log leftover from doing our house that we made into a bench.

If you could see the bottom line financials for a lot of the people with all of those toys, it might lead you to look at them through different glasses! I have nothing against nice toys, but I think it is horrible that people will spend money they don't have and mortgage any insurance of their financial future to try to keep up with the Joneses, you know? I think it is great that you have a fun paddle boat, a beautiful day on the water, and a clue about money! Smile Jerry
